This module builds upon foundational improvisation techniques (Taqāsīm) on the Qanun, advancing the student’s ability to construct spontaneous, expressive, and structurally sound musical performance. Learners will explore complex Maqam modulations (Sīr al-Maqām), intricate rhythmic frameworks (Īqā‘āt), and advanced ornamentation techniques, including fast tremolo, microtonal inflection (‘Urab manipulation), and dynamic plectrum work (Rīsha). Emphasizing idiomatic phrasing and stylistic authenticity, the unit prepares musicians to execute fluid, artistic improvisations both in solo contexts and within ensemble performances.

This unit is designed to advance the learner’s live performance capabilities, stage presence, and artistic leadership as a Qanun soloist and ensemble member. Building upon foundational performance skills, students will focus on program curation, musical interpretation, and high-level audience engagement. The curriculum covers the execution of complex suites , structured soloist interactions within traditional ensembles (Takht), dynamic control in live settings, and mastering the transition between scripted repertoire and spontaneous solo passages (Taqāsīm). Emphasis is placed on stylistic authenticity, stage communication, and overcoming performance tension.

This unit focuses on refining intermediate to advanced practical techniques required for professional Qanun performance. Students will deepen their technical control, focusing on precision, speed, and expressive nuance. Key areas of study include advanced plectrum (Rīsha) control, rapid tremolo , dynamic left-hand ‘Urab (lever) manipulation during performance, polyphonic/octave plucking , and contextual damping. Through structured exercises and repertoire application, learners will enhance their hand independence, tone production, and stylistic authenticity within diverse Maqam frameworks.

This module develops the learner’s fundamental ability to sight-read musical notation on the Qanun using the first opening position. Learners will develop accuracy and fluency in identifying and reading notes within and around the staff, while maintaining correct rhythmic values, meter, tempo, and basic musical expression.

The module focuses on developing coordination between visual recognition of the musical notation and its immediate execution on the instrument. Learners will practice reading simple melodic exercises and short musical passages without prior preparation, while applying correct fingering, hand position, plectrum technique, and appropriate use of the first opening.

Learners will also develop the ability to identify the key signature and required accidentals before and during sight-reading, and to maintain continuity and musical flow when encountering unfamiliar passages. Through progressive exercises and practical performance activities, learners will improve their confidence, accuracy, rhythmic stability, and overall fluency in Qanun sight-reading at the first-opening level.
